In April, Calvin’s Forensics team (headed by Mr. Jewett) participated in both the regional and the state competitions.
Six of Calvin’s students had competed at Regionals at Leslie High School on April 14. Four of the six went on to compete at State two weeks later at Oakland Community College in Auburn Hills.
For those of you who don’t know what Forensics is, let me address your elephant of a question: Forensics is not a competition for the sciences. It is rather about discussion, debate, speeches, and acting.
Forensics is also not just a competition or an extension to the drama club. There are several categories that utilize various talents. Do you enjoy quoting and acting out plays or movies? Try Dramatic Interpretation. Is there this one product that you just adore and want others to use? Try Sales. Do you and a group of friends want to perform your favorite movie together? Try Multiple. There are so many more categories, each with its own special spice and flavor.
This year’s team consisted of Jared Ebels, Gabrielle Eisma, Megan Timmer, Katherine Tanja, Kathryn Van Wyhe, Luke Austin, Ashlyn Ritsema, and Sam Aupperlee.
Six of these students competed in Regionals with five qualifying for State: Katherine got 1st in Sales, Jared got 2nd in Dramatic Interpretation, Gabrielle got 3rd in Storytelling while Ashlyn got 4th, and Megan got 4th in Prose.
At state our team performed quite well with Katherine getting 5th, Jared getting 14th, Gabrielle getting 16th, and Ashlyn getting 24th.
These students have worked very hard the past few months to fine tune their pieces and presentations. They deserve to be recognised for their hard work.
Below is a list of all of the performance pieces done by this year’s team.
Student | Category | Piece/Item of Sale |
Jared Ebels | Dramatic Interpretation | Dear Evan Hansen by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul |
Kathryn Van Wyhe | Dramatic Interpretation | Strong Enough For Both of Us by D.M. Larson |
