A Peek Into the Life of a Twin

The great escape from the crib: the escape most toddlers only dream of, but the one that my twin brother and I had mastered. As young twins, my brother and I shared a crib, and being quite new to this world, we loathed the walls that held us captive. So like great criminals, we perfected the art of escape by boosting each other over the crib walls to waddle free.
The relationship between a person and their twin is unlike any other. For many “non-twins” this relationship is a confusing, abstract idea. How can you be both best friends and greatest enemies? As a twin myself, I can’t really explain it. There are parts that I hate and parts that are pretty great. So in order to give you, the typical “wombmate-less” person, a peek into what it’s like being a twin, I made a pros and cons list from polling some of the twins from our own school.

Pros:
Having a built-in best friend.
Ganging up on people.
Having someone who has gone through the same experiences.
Not having to do things alone.
Having things in common that other people don’t.
Having someone to talk to.
Being able to basically read each other’s minds.
Having a partner in crime.

Cons:
Being viewed as one person instead of separate people.
Sharing friends.
Sharing a room.
Sharing a birthday.
Sharing everything.
Getting asked the same questions ALL THE TIME.
Fighting a lot.
Having a messy twin.
Having a twin that is always late.
Struggling to be an individual.

So as you can see, being a twin is neither all good, nor all bad. It ultimately comes down to sharing a big part of your life which can be hard but also rewarding. So if you know a twin, make sure you treat them as an individual… and maybe don’t ask who’s older because you’d only be the 162,531,972nd person to ask.
