Mr. Adema Has a Candy Machine and Other Useful Tips to Have a Great Freshman Year

Hopefully, none of this advice is too cheesy or stereotypical. This is especially important for you new students and freshmen, but, let’s be honest, we probably all need this advice anyways.
  1. Walk on the right side of the hallway it’s like a road. Also, don’t walk or stand in giant packs, you aren’t the only people in the hallways.
  2. Be mature, don’t act like a two-year-old.
  3. I know this may seem crazy, but be friends with your teachers, it’ll make these next four years so much better.
  4. We don’t actually get out at noon… or do we?
  5. Go to the old study hall room, room 96, to get in line for hot lunch. Don’t go through the kitchen! I found that out the hard way.
  6. Try everything! Don’t wait for another year to try something you might really love because you’re afraid. Live this year with no regerts. Yes, I said regerts.
  7. The boiler works but it can still get pretty chilly in the winter so stashing a blanket in your locker would be a wise idea. The same can be said for right now when AC feels more like a legend than cold air. So I would definitely recommend bringing a fan of your own to school. Don’t have a small fan that fits into your locker? No problem! You can just carry around a box fan and use the cord as a strap or handle.
  8. Heads up, you sit on the top of the bleachers for sporting events. That doesn’t mean your time won’t come to sit in the front though.
  9. Cliques do not make you more popular. The secret is no one is actually popular so it’s not worth all the drama in the end.
  10. For games, there are themes for what you wear so if you don’t wanna show up on a red white and blue night in neon because you didn’t know the theme, go follow @squire_squad on Twitter.
  11. The upperclassmen do not hate you, but they don’t want you to leave this place without learning some real-life lessons too. They really aren’t as scary as you think.
  12. You know who else isn’t as scary as you think? Mr. Olthoff. He’s super funny and pretty sarcastic, so don’t take everything he says literally. He’s also a sick chef.
  13. Participate! Come on, we know that you want your grade to win during spirit weeks so dress up it helps them out. Or go to some games, make a petition, maybe join some clubs *cough, cough* like the newspaper.
  14. Oh yeah, by the way, Mr. Adema has the best candy machine ever in his room. It’s only 25 cents and you will get way more than you could ever get from the vending machine. Don’t try to hack it open somehow, cause he does have a security camera. You have been warned, enjoy!
  15. In Math, ask for the online book ASAP. Trust me, your back and backpack will thank you later.
  16. Everyone has unofficial “assigned” lunch spots, but don’t worry about that yet. On every beautiful day, you can go outside to eat lunch. You don’t have to eat in the same spot everyday anyways.
  17. Be RESPECTFUL! It will get you so much farther than playing Fortnite on your phone during class will.
  18. Repeat after me: “Your grades do not define you, your grades do not define you.” That being said try your best to learn, not to earn a good grade. Remember anything above an 80 is not a bad grade!
  19. This is nothing like High School Musical, Mean Girls, or any other portrayal of high school.
  20. You won’t use half of the stuff you got during your back to school shopping, but you will never have enough pencils. Cherish the ones you find on the ground.
  21. Lastly, be kind, it’s not going to make these next four years any better for yourself by making it miserable for someone else.

Honestly, this year and any year is what you make of it. Make sure you have a good support group and that you can be a support to others because this ain’t no joyride. Regardless, you will grow and you will learn many important things this year. If I can find eight pencils and pens on the ground since school started, anything is possible. You got this!
