Summer Essentials

Summer is nearly here, and I can already tell it’s going to be a good one! What with the crazy winter-spring we’ve been having, it’s about time the sun started shining again. While the Seniors get a head start on the summer fun and sun, it’s also appropriate to acknowledge the poor underclassmen who have a few extra weeks and exams….sorry underclassmen! We’ll think of you while we’re hard at work or basking at the beach. You’ll be there soon enough!

Sunglasses: Sunglasses are not only fun and classy, they’re also essential for safety reasons. The sun can be just as harmful to your eyes as your possible sunglasses-tan you’ll be sporting.

Fresh Flowers: This is something I’ve found more and more inviting as summer grows closer: plants and flowers in the home. I love the idea of bringing outside inside, and there is no prettier way to do that than with a bouquet! Some summer favorites are sunflowers, daffodils, dahlias, and zinnias. Lemonade: A classic that is not to be missed! Don’t be afraid to take the original poolside drink and spruce it up with mint, fresh cut strawberries, blueberries, or crushed ice for a slushie.

Farmer’s Markets: Downtown Grand Rapids and Grandville both host beautiful, farmer-run markets full with booths overflowing with home grown fruits and vegetables. Not only that, but kettle corn, honey, jewelry, and art! Don’t miss out: the markets runs all summer. Here’s the link to find the closest one to you! http://mifma.org/farmers-markets/grandville-farmers-market/

Sandals: Anyone who loves birkenstocks has a special place in my heart. While I have been told multiple times that my grandma wore similar shoes when she was younger, I can’t help but love the sandals (with or without socks). Sandals or flip flops are an absolute essential, whether it be for lifeguards, gardeners, camp counsellors, or beach dwellers.

Sunhat: There are thousands of wonderful hats out there for girls and guys, so a sunhat doesn’t have to be the only option…but, if you’ve been looking for one, I suggest World Market if you don’t mind an expensive buy, or Marshalls on the right day for a steal!

Letters of Correspondence: A subject close to my heart, writing letters is one of the greatest ways to connect with both your roots and your friends. They don’t have to be long, or glamourous, and they don’t have to be eloquent. It’s simply a special way to let them know you’re thinking of them more than a quick text or snapchat.

Toasted Marshmallows: Yes, please! It’s nearly firepit season again, and there is nothing more delicious than toasted marshmallows on a cool night after a long day outside. Look up from your snack, and say hello to the stars for a few seconds. We are living incredibly strange, beautiful lives on a strange, beautiful planet where pure sugar is squished between graham crackers and chocolate and eaten by the pack.

Travel Often: I can’t stress this one enough: high school goes by quickly, and the world doesn’t stop spinning for you. Take the time to enjoy its nooks and crannies, whether that be Europe, Asia, Africa, or your own backyard. Adventure doesn’t have to be extravagant; it just has to get you out your front door.

P.S. One might wonder why there is no “Spring Essentials” in the Insquirer’s history… if you would like to complete the series, please refer back to “Winter Essentials,” and change the title. All materials were, in fact, still essential.
