Editor’s Note: September 2018

Welcome to the Calvin Christian 2018-19 school year! This year promises to be an eventful one with the welcoming of the class of 2022 to the High School, the Drama department putting on a Shakespeare play, the Music department going to New York in the spring, the athletics departments trying once more to earn gold in their respective competitions, and with the class of 2019 graduating. So much is happening this year, and there is only one place you can turn to stay up to date: The Insquirer.

The school newspaper was established last year at the hands of Katie Tanja (Class of 2018) and Rachel Lee (Class of 2018). Because of them this paper was founded and will hopefully result in an even stronger community at this school that gathers around shared experiences and understanding of things happening outside of our circles.

Hopefully, this paper can become that.

In our first issue of the year, we have several articles featuring many school sports such as Freshmen and Varsity Volleyball, Girls Varsity Golf, JV Boys Soccer, and Cross Country.

Then we have an article suggesting what to do in the month of October by Emily Haan. She advises to check out the Haunt and an apple orchard to fully submerge yourself in the Fall spirit. Check out her article Things to Do in the Month of October.

Each month we will have a different teacher featured in an article called the Feature Teacher. This month features Mr. DeWaal and was written by Sarah Vandenbos. Sarah tells us about his favorite memory of teaching so far and his advice for seniors and everyone else. Check out her article September Feature Teacher: Mr. DeWaal.

On November 8, 9, and 10, the Calvin Dramatic Society is bringing Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare to an LC near you. Landon Pasma gives us a taste and some background to Calvin’s unique production of this iconic comedy containing battles of wit, an evil sister, classic 90’s references, a wedding, and a funeral. Check out his article Much Ado About What?

The Top of the Month was a tradition started by graduate Anthony Hoffman and is now being carried on by Delaney Grooters. September’s Top of the Month calls back to the schoolwide service project with Feed My Starving Children and notes several of the changes happening (or not happening) in the school like Chapel in the LC and longer breaks on Wednesday. Check out her article Top of the Month: September.

Are you stressed and worried about school, or are new to the school? Well, never fear because Ella Sytsema and Gemma Martinez are here. They both write tips and tricks for those still learning to walk these un-air-conditioned halls. Check out Ella’s article Mr. Adema Has a Candy Machine and Other Useful Tips… and Gemma’s article Tips to Survive High School!

Sydney Ritsema analyzes the pros and cons of moving chapels to the LC in her article Chapel in the Learning Commons! Jack Lanning explains the Spanish Immersion program in What is the 9th Grade Spanish Immersion Class. Gwyn Eisma highlights and suggests places to visit in ArtPrize before it closes his weekend in ArtPrize 10! Then Ella gives advice to those suffering procrastination in If You’re Reading This, Chances Are You’re Procrastinating Too.

Enjoy the first articles of the year, we hope you have as much fun reading them as we had writing them. Also, if you have any interest in joining the Newspaper club please email me at kvanwyhe19@student.gccsmi.org for more information.

Enjoy this issue.
